Low Storage Cabinet

This cabinet had been waiting in the wings for some time. I had some very wild Olive Ash waiting for a certain project and finally everything came together. I countered the dramatic grain by using a restrained and somewhat contemporary design. Although a very simple design I am pleased to call it mine and the wood’s own expression from the ground up.

The boards were carefully cut to allow the wood to create a wrap where the dark heart of the timber flows through the piece. The fissure was carefully offset to create a natural flow. To contrast the pale ash at the edges Brown Oak was used for the drawer fronts and the door panels. Ironmongery is of wrought and cast iron.

Through dovetails add some visual interest but do not overwhelm the piece as their is no contrasting timber. Although I prefer hand tools, I used machines to prepare the wide ash boards as the area around the fissure is rock hard and unforgiving. All other aspects completed by hand. Finished in Hardwax Oil
